Introduction to the Behavioral Neuroscience Program

The Behavioral Neuroscience Program is offered by the Psychology Department at Western Washington University. This program provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the biological basis of behavior, including the structure and function of the brain, nervous system, and other physiological systems.

Program Overview

The program is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in the principles of behavioral neuroscience, including the biological basis of behavior, learning and memory, sensation and perception, and neuroplasticity. Students will also have the opportunity to engage in research and internship experiences, which will provide them with hands-on experience in the field.

Internship Program

The Undergraduate Internship TMS Technician Program is a 10-week program that provides students with the opportunity to work with a TMS Technician and Neuropsychiatrists at the Neuropsychiatric Treatment Center. This program is highly competitive and offers students a unique opportunity to gain experience in a clinical setting.

The Experience

Interns will experience the day-to-day operations of a Neuropsychiatric Treatment Center and will have the opportunity to shadow a TMS Technician in an outpatient clinic setting. They will learn about common psychiatric disorders and the role of TMS Technicians and Neuropsychiatrists in a Neuropsychiatric Treatment Center practice.

Cost of the Program

Although the Internship TMS Technician Program itself is free, students accepted into the program must undergo health screening and purchase malpractice insurance, which costs approximately $40.

Program Requirements

To be eligible for the program, students must be accepted into the Behavioral Neuroscience Program, be enrolled as a WWU undergraduate student, and have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.9. Students must also provide up-to-date immunization records and purchase malpractice insurance.

Applying for the Internship

Internships are competitive, and students will be accepted into the program based on compatibility and merit. Applications submitted in Spring Quarter will be considered for either Summer or Fall Quarter, and applications submitted in Fall Quarter will be considered for either Winter or Spring Quarter.

Preparing for the Internship

Once a student has been accepted into the program, they must provide up-to-date immunization records and proof of malpractice insurance. Failure to complete these requirements will disqualify a student from participating in the program.

Starting the Internship

The student will finalize arrangements and schedule with their internship Clinical Associate during or before the first week of the quarter. It is expected that the student will spend approximately 3-4 hours per week in the clinical office.

Evaluation of the Internship

The intern must complete a weekly summary report for each week of the internship, which will be evaluated and marked completed in the gradebook. The student must also submit a summary of their internship at the end of the program, highlighting the knowledge and skills gained.

Conduct and Attire

Interns are bound by confidentiality agreements and must respect patient privacy at all times. They are expected to represent the University in an ethical, courteous, and respectful manner. Cell phones should be off or silenced during internship hours.

Removal from the Internship

Violations of conduct or ethical practices may result in removal of the student from the Internship in TMS Technician Program. Failing to meet eligibility requirements may also result in removal from the internship.
