Program Overview
Introduction to AFROTC
The Air Force Reserve Officers' Training Corps (AFROTC) is a program designed for college students to become officers in the United States Air Force. Upon completion of a bachelor's degree and AFROTC, students will be commissioned as officers, followed by specific training in a career field.
Joining AFROTC
To join AFROTC, students must be enrolled as full-time students. Freshmen can register for AS101, while sophomores or students with only three years left of their degree may still join but need to contact the Unit Admissions Officers first.
Difference between AFROTC and Enlisting in the Air Force
AFROTC is one of three commissioning sources for the USAF. Officers are trained to be leaders and supervisors of enlisted personnel, with commensurate rank, pay, and career opportunities. Enlisting in the Air Force, on the other hand, is done through a local recruiter, followed by basic training and prospective technical training, and does not require a college degree.
Scholarship Opportunities
AFROTC offers various scholarship opportunities. Prospective AFROTC cadets can apply for a high school scholarship before entering college, while in-college cadets can apply for an in-college scholarship, handled by the host detachment.
Program Structure
The AFROTC program is designed to challenge and train students' leadership skills and potential. The academic class teaches military education and aerospace history, while leadership labs take place once a week to train cadets to react as leaders to various situations. Experienced cadets are tasked with leadership positions within the cadet corps and are responsible for training new cadets. Students are required to wear a uniform to their ROTC classes during the week.
