Writing Certificate Internships
Through community partnerships, the English Department provides internships that allow students to gain experience in real professional and creative settings. The internship course, ENGL 4890: Writing Internship, enables writing certificate students to work in supervised placements while learning to write for real audiences, build experience and confidence, and finish with portfolio-ready materials before graduation.
The internship is a required part of the Professional Writing Certificate and the Business and Technical Writing Certificate. It is also available to students working toward the Creative Writing Certificate, though it is not required.
Students have completed internships with many respected organizations and St. Louis institutions, including:
- St. Louis Magazine
- Elsevier
- River Styx
- Litmag
- UMSL Writing Center
- Humans of St. Louis
These experiences help students strengthen their writing in live workplace and community contexts while making professional connections and gaining a clearer sense of where their writing can take them.
