Program Description

High school English teachers use their love of words and literature to foster and develop verbal and written comprehension skills, ensuring student literacy. They also instruct in the areas of grammar, writing, and analyzing works of literature, adapting content to suit students' interests and abilities. The UMSL English Education program emphasizes a strong content base in literature, writing, and language study, as well as professional, up-to-date approaches in literacy education.

Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education

The BS in Secondary Education, with an emphasis in English, prepares students to teach in secondary school settings, grades 9-12. This program requires the selection and completion of required coursework in English and includes field and practicum experiences in high school settings, culminating in Missouri teacher certification.

Program Requirements

All majors must meet the general education requirements of the university in addition to completing degree-specific curriculum requirements.

The UMSL Honors College is a certificate program that can be paired with any major without adding extra classes or extending time to graduate. Classes in the Honors College are seminar-style, meaning they are based in reading, writing, discussion, and critical thinking.

Undergraduate Research

Students are encouraged and supported as they engage in exciting activities in and outside of the classroom that enrich their academic and professional understanding of their chosen area of study. All majors are encouraged to participate in Undergraduate Research and Scholarship to produce discipline-specific intellectual or creative innovations to their field.
