Program Overview

Introduction to the Musical Theatre Program

The Musical Theatre program at Ball State University is a highly competitive and prestigious course of study. To be considered for admission, applicants must apply to the university and audition for the program.

Admission Requirements

To apply for the Musical Theatre program, students must first apply to the university. As part of the online application, students will be prompted to complete a supplemental theatre application, which includes requesting an audition date and location.

Audition Process

The audition for the Musical Theatre program consists of three parts: acting, singing, and dancing. Applicants will be auditioning for two or more members of the faculty, who will be assessing their strengths and potential in each area.

Audition Guidelines

  • Acting Audition: Prepare one contemporary monologue that is one-minute in length (maximum). Choose monologues that are well written and from published plays.
  • Singing Audition: Prepare at least two 16-32 bar song selections contrasting in style that demonstrate your range and versatility. Music must be printed and in a 1-inch, three-ring binder.
  • Dance Audition: Wear form-fitting dancewear and flat jazz shoes or a jazz sneaker. The dance audition will include learning a Musical Theatre dance combination and a short ballet combo.

Audition Dates and Locations

Auditions are held on various dates and locations, including:

  • On Campus: Saturdays, February 7th and 21st, 2026
  • Off Campus: Los Angeles Unifieds, Saturday, February 7, 2026
  • National Unified Auditions: New York Unifieds, Saturday-Sunday, January 24-25, 2026; Chicago Unifieds, Monday-Thursday, February 2-5, 2026

What to Expect

Applicants will be notified of dates, times, schedules, materials needed, and audition guidelines via email no later than two weeks prior to the audition date chosen. The audition process will include an introduction, followed by the acting, singing, and dancing auditions.

Tips for Auditioning

  • Practice your introduction and transitions between pieces.
  • Choose material that you connect with and love.
  • Research the program and be prepared to ask questions.
  • Be yourself and relax during the audition process.
