Introduction to the Bachelor of Urban Planning and Development

The Bachelor of Urban Planning and Development program is designed to provide students with a solid grounding in the broad concepts and specific skills needed to excel as an urban planner in the public or private sector. The program is delivered on-campus and consists of 120 credits. It is accredited by the Planning Accreditation Board.


Program Overview

The future of housing, mobility, just communities, climate resilience, and livability all begin with conversations in urban planning. An education in urban planning will provide students with the expertise, analytical judgment, communication skills, and ethical leadership required to address the pressing issues that communities face. The program's industry-aligned curriculum and hands-on learning will outfit students with the expertise and confidence to achieve in their future careers.


Curriculum

The program's curriculum is designed to provide a balance of research, history, theory, policy, economics, statistics, geospatial mapping, design, analysis, visual, verbal, and written communication. These diverse tasks and skills are used by urban planners on a daily basis.


Alternative Entry Program

Beginning in the academic year, an alternative entry program has been created for current students who are interested in studying urban planning. This program is not for students admitted into the College of Architecture and Planning. Alternative entry students take two spring planning courses PLAN 100 and PLAN 105 -- that will prepare them for application to the second year of the Bachelor of Urban Planning and Development program.
