The Audition Process
Approximately 1,400 applicants audition each year, with 16-20 students offered a place in the incoming acting class. The audition process involves preparing two monologues, each one-minute in length, that contrast in tone, language styles, and character.
Material Selection
- Prepare two monologues that are each one-minute (maximum) in length.
- Choose monologues that are well written and from published plays.
- Avoid monologues from movies, monologue books, musicals, and the internet.
- Monologues should have a beginning, middle, and end with a journey, discovery, or change.
- Choose characters that are within five years of your playable age range.
- Do not choose monologues that require accents, eccentric characterizations, props, or costumes.
- Portray one character per monologue.
- Avoid material that is overly sexual, violent, or offensive.
Introduction
- Your monologue audition should be preceded by an introduction including your name, the name of the play, and the playwright for each piece.
- Practice your introduction to feel confident.
Focus
- Choose focal points slightly above and/or to the side of those you are auditioning for.
- Don't look the auditioners in the eye or use them as your scene partner.
- Practice transitioning from one piece to the next.
What to Wear
- Choose clothing and shoes that are simple and comfortable.
- Avoid large jewelry and uncomfortable or hard-to-stand-in high heels.
- Ensure your hair is out of your face.
Researching the Program
- Create a list of questions to ask each university you are auditioning for.
- Research the programs prior to your audition to understand what differentiates one program from another.
- Be prepared to ask questions and learn more about the program during your audition.
Being Yourself
- Relax, breathe, and be yourself during the audition.
- This is a time for the faculty to learn more about you and for you to learn more about the program.
