Introduction to the Certificate in Nursing Education
The Certificate in Nursing Education is designed for registered nurses who already possess a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree and an active nursing license. This program is tailored for nurses interested in developing the knowledge and skills necessary to teach nursing in both clinical and classroom settings.
Program Overview
The Certificate in Nursing Education is a nine-credit program that prepares experienced nurses with comprehensive knowledge of curriculum development, classroom and clinical teaching, and evaluation strategies. The program enables students to develop course syllabi, prepare for individual class presentations, and utilize evaluative measures in clinical and classroom environments. A key component of the program is the completion of 220 clinical hours with an academic or clinical nurse educator.
Admission Requirements
To be eligible for the Certificate in Nursing Education, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Possess an MSN degree from an accredited nursing school
- Hold a current, active, non-restricted RN license
- Comply with the School of Nursing requirements, including maintaining a health record, CPR certification, and an active Connecticut RN license
- Applicants must have an active, unrestricted RN license in the State of Connecticut and hold a bachelor's degree or master's degree in nursing prior to the time of application
Application Deadlines
Application deadlines for the program are as follows:
- October 1st for admission into the spring semester
- February 15th for admission into the fall semester Incomplete applications received after October 15th (for spring entry) or March 1st (for fall entry) will not be considered.
Course Requirements
The Post-Master's Certificate (PMC) Program includes the following course requirements:
- NUR 520 Curriculum Development (3 credits)
- NUR 537 Role of the Nurse Educator (6 credits, including 220 clinical hours)
A strongly recommended course for post-master candidates who are not currently practicing as a Nurse Practitioner is:
- NUR 523 Advanced Clinical Practice (6 credits, including 180 clinical hours)
