Program Overview


Studio Art, B.S. - Painting

The Studio Art, B.S. - Painting program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in the field of studio art, with a focus on painting. The program outline and graduation requirements are listed below.


General Education Requirements

All bachelor's degree programs include liberal education (LEP) and writing (W) course requirements. To review more detailed information regarding these requirements, courses in the major and/or cognate may also be used to satisfy LEP requirements where noted below.


Major Requirements (57 Credits)

  • Minimum of 50 percent of studio art credits must be earned at Southern Connecticut State University.
  • 'C' or better required in all major and concentration courses.

Studio Art Core Requirements (39 Credits)

  • ART 104 History of Western Art I
  • ART 105 History of Western Art II
  • ART 112 Color and 2-D Design
  • ART 113 Three Dimensional Design
  • ART 150 Introductory Drawing I
  • ART 151 Drawing II, Drawing and Composition
    • Select six studio art courses at the 200 or 300-level, from a minimum of four different areas:
      • Ceramics
      • Graphic Design
      • Jewelry/Metals
      • Painting
      • Photography
      • Printmaking
      • Sculpture
    • Select one art history course at the 300-level or above

Concentration - Painting (18 Credits)

  • ART 220 Introductory Painting
  • ART 250 Intermediate Drawing
  • ART 420 Advanced Portfolio
  • ART 493 Studio Art Capstone
    • Select two from:
      • ART 320 Intermediate Painting I
      • ART 321 Intermediate Painting II
      • ART 350 Advanced Drawing I
      • ART 351 Advanced Drawing II

Additional Requirements
