Introduction to the First Year Seminar

The First Year Seminar (FYS) is a required course for all first-year students at Washington & Jefferson College, taken during the Fall Term. It is an intensive study of a focused topic and an introduction to the intellectual life of the College. The course is designed to promote engagement and intellectual curiosity, helping students make the transition to college-level work by emphasizing academic skills such as critical reading, thinking, and analysis.

Benefits of the First Year Seminar

The FYS seminars offer several benefits to help new students adjust to college life, including:

• Classes are kept small and structured to encourage discussion
• Thought-provoking topics reflect the instructors' passions
• Living/learning communities: students in some seminars will be housed together in the residence halls, extending the academic conversation beyond the classroom
