Program Overview


Introduction to the Big Buddy Program

The Queens College Big Buddy program is a semester-long paid internship program serving students ages 5-13 at the Queens Community House Pomonok After-School Program. This program provides Queens College students with the opportunity to develop professional experience working directly with children, building career skills including communication, leadership, and teamwork.


Program Overview

The Big Buddy program was originally started in 1989 by Arthur Salz, Professor Emeritus of Queens College's Department of Elementary Education. QC students who participate in the program receive a stipend to mentor children in grades K-5 and support academic, recreational, and cultural activities that promote positive youth development. Participants work 6 hours per week on onsite activities, lesson plan creation, and collaborate with other QC Big Buddies.


Requirements to be a Big Buddy

To be eligible for the Big Buddy program, applicants must:


  • Be a full-time QC undergraduate or graduate student (enrolled for 12+ credits)
  • Be in good academic standing (minimum 2.5 GPA)
  • Have experience in tutoring children preferred, but not required
  • Be able to work on-site at the Pomonok After-School Program (located on Kissena Blvd. across from Queens College) two weekdays per week throughout the Spring semester

Hourly Requirements and Compensation

Big Buddy mentors will work 3 hours on two weekdays per week on site, totaling 6 hours. Additionally, mentors must commit to hours outside of the site, including:


  • 1 hour per week to create lesson plans and reflections on the sessions
  • 1 in-person orientation at the beginning of the Spring semester
  • 3 in-person monthly professional development sessions throughout the semester Big Buddies will receive a stipend for their participation.

Application and Admission

All majors are welcome to apply for the Big Buddy program. Experience in tutoring children is preferred but not required. The program accepts applications for the Spring semester, with updates on the application process typically available the following Fall.
