Program Overview

Studio Art BFA Program

The Studio Art BFA program at Queens College is designed to prepare students for creative and professional careers in the field of fine arts. The program offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, which requires 63 credits to complete.

Program Overview

Students in the Studio Art BFA program will develop the foundations of art-making, color, and form in their introductory 100-level courses. They will then hone their studio practices in 200 and 300-level classes. The program culminates in two consecutive semesters of senior-thesis courses, where students will present their work in the 4th Floor Student Gallery, located in Klapper Hall, which features a student gallery where undergraduates showcase their work from classes and thesis courses, as well as visiting-artist exhibitions and Masters in Fine-Arts thesis shows. The Godwin-Ternbach Museum, housed within Klapper Hall, also provides students with access to original fine-artwork and collaborations with other artists, scholars, and museums.

Program Mission Statement

The mission of the Queens College Studio Art Department is to teach students how to make works of art, whether they are two-dimensional, three-dimensional, time-based forms, or transitory actions and activities. The department encourages students to think about art-making as resistance to the habitual, the apathetic, and the uncritical, and to contribute to global culture by offering ways of seeing and thinking that challenge, complicate, and estrange conventional understandings of the world.

Facilities and Resources

The program offers fully equipped studios, including:

  • A large ceramics studio with electric and gas kilns
  • A wood-shop with tools for wood-carving and processing lumber
  • A metalshop with welders, metal-sculpting tools, and a bronze foundry
  • A print-making studio equipped for silk-screen, copper, linoleum, woodblock, and stone-lithography
  • Numerous studios for traditional oil and acrylic painting and charcoal and graphite drawing
