Program Overview

Introduction to the BA in Communication Sciences and Disorders

The BA in Communication Sciences and Disorders is a comprehensive undergraduate program designed to provide students with a thorough understanding of the principles and practices of communication sciences and disorders. This program is tailored to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to pursue careers in speech-language pathology, audiology, and related fields.

Admission Criteria

To be admitted to the BA in Communication Sciences and Disorders program, students must meet specific criteria. These include:

  • A cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 (B)
  • 24 completed credits from a regionally accredited college or university
  • Transfer students must be admitted by both Queens College and the CSD major before registration into any major courses

Application Process

Applications for the CSD major are evaluated on a rolling admission basis. This means that applications are reviewed as they are received, and qualified applicants undergo a competitive review process. The number of students admitted to the major each semester is dependent on available space, and not all qualified students may be admitted.

Registration Process

CSD majors register for courses during the regular registration period in CUNYfirst. Students who are part of special groups that receive priority with early registration, such as Macaulay Honors or the Seek Program, will register on the regular registration date for all CSD courses based on their student classification.

Undergraduate Advising

The department provides personalized and comprehensive advisement using a three-step model:

  1. Large Group General Advisement Meeting: Mandatory for all UG CSD students, led by the Program Director, to provide general tips for success in the major and a broad overview of the major requirements.
  2. Small Group Advisor Meeting: Students meet with their assigned CSD Advisor to discuss insights, advice, and guidance, and to answer CSD-related questions.
  3. Individual Advisement Meeting: Students schedule a meeting with their assigned CSD advisor to clarify and answer specific questions related to their personal situation, concerns, and issues in the CSD major.

Dual Majors or Minors in Linguistics

Students interested in taking a second major in Linguistics or a minor in Linguistics are advised to declare this with the Registrar's office. Note that LCD 110 Phonetics may satisfy the General Linguistics LCD 150 Linguistic Phonetics requirement, and LCD 105 Fundamentals of Psycholinguistics is an elective course for General Linguistics.

Professional Preparation in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology

Professional preparation for careers in speech-language pathology and audiology is accomplished exclusively at the graduate level. Students interested in pursuing these careers should contact the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and speak with their advisors.

Counseling Services

Counseling Services provides free and confidential services to enrolled and registered undergraduate or graduate students at Queens College. Services include individual and group counseling via phone or Zoom, depending on the student's preference.
