Program Overview


Introduction to the Gray STEM Scholars Program

The Gray STEM Scholars program at Macaulay Honors College is designed to empower STEM students to realize their dreams of a career in STEM research or medicine. The program focuses on disparities in health research and preparation for graduate and professional education through partnerships with the Program for Research Initiatives in Science and Math and the Icahn School of Medicine's Institute for Health Equity Research at Mount Sinai.

Eligibility Criteria for the Gray STEM Scholars Program

Students are evaluated based on their academic performance, career goals, and motivation to be a researcher or clinician. To be eligible, students must:


  • Apply as an incoming Freshman
  • Have an overall average of 90 and above
  • Complete a Macaulay Application for the campus of their choice
  • Intend to declare a major related to their goal of being in scientific research, MD/PHD, or being a physician. Acceptable majors include:

Commitment and Expectations

In addition to the graduation requirements for the Macaulay Honors College, Gray STEM Scholars are expected to:


  • Achieve a minimum GPA of 3.3 in their first three semesters and a minimum GPA of 3.5 in each semester thereafter
  • Participate in the program for the entirety of their undergraduate career once they have accepted the offer
  • Attend mandatory Gray STEM Scholars events, workshops, trainings, and meetings each semester (approximately 1-2 per month)
  • Develop a schedule with their mentor to complete 50-100 hours each semester
  • Present a research poster of their work at the John Jay College PRISM program research symposium at the end of the academic year
