Program Details
- The program is a sixty college credit program (two years) that earns students an Associate in Applied Science Degree (A.A.S.) in Maritime Technology from Kingsborough Community College (KCC), a unit of the City University of New York. The training is 50% "hands-on" in labs and on boats and 50% classroom. Graduates are employed in New York Harbor as Captains, mates or deckhands aboard ferries, dinner boats, tug boats and private yachts. Graduates are also employed ashore as marina managers and in vessel repair service and sales. Many graduates use sixty credits to satisfy requirements for entry into NYC Police and Fire Departments and work as NYC Police and Fire Officers both on NYC Police and Fire boats and on land. Most students work during summer between first and second year in Maritime internships. The program is U.S. Coast Guard approved, and graduates earn 225 days of sea-time applicable toward a Captains license or United States Merchant Marine Officers license. Thirty credits are transferable to senior (4-year) colleges. Many classes are conducted aboard the college's training vessels and in the campus marina. The program has an Industry Advisory Panel that includes the National Marine Manufacturers Association, New York Marine Manufacturers Association, NY Water Taxi, McAllister Towing, The Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance, and Ocean Careers. The program also has a Facebook page where students can connect with Maritime Tech. The program has a variety of resources available to students, including a program director, an assistant to the director, and a variety of courses and training programs. The program also has a number of career opportunities available to graduates, including working as a Captain, mate, or deckhand on a ferry, dinner boat, tug boat, or private yacht, or working as a marina manager or in vessel repair service and sales.
