Program Overview

Introduction to the Nurse Fellowship Academy

The Nurse Fellowship Academy, offered through the CUNY School of Professional Studies, is an initiative funded by the NYC Mayor's Office of Talent and Workforce Development. The Academy aims to train and support professional nurses through innovative education and workforce-based learning credentialing programs.

Key Aspects of the Academy

  • An evidence-based curriculum incorporating practice standards and core competencies
  • Open enrollment for nurses with varying levels of education and experience
  • Flexible participation supporting self-directed learning
  • Diverse participant cohorts from various clinical backgrounds and healthcare settings
  • Small cohort groups for enriched shared learning and practical application
  • Ongoing mentoring and professional development

Collaboration and Goals

The Academy collaborates with healthcare industry partners to upskill registered and advanced practice nurses. The goal is to increase the number of nurse preceptors, educators, and leaders, supporting advancement to entry, mid-level, and high-skilled positions in NYC healthcare settings and across CUNY Nursing Programs.

Enrollment and Eligibility

Enrollment is primarily facilitated by a health system, with provider organizations sponsoring and recruiting nursing staff into the credential programs. Additionally, enrollment includes eligible applicants through nursing professional associations, industry partners, CUNY nursing graduate students, and new adjunct or part-time faculty across CUNY nursing programs. As of June 2025, applicants must be New York City residents.

Program Funding and Support

Program funding supports operational costs, access to faculty coaches, and professional development in preceptor, educator, and leadership roles. Employer sponsors are encouraged to cover staff costs for participation time (12-16 hours). The Nursing Academy provides program funding to participants for one credential (entry or advanced).
