Program Overview
Introduction to CUNY School of Medicine
The CUNY School of Medicine is a medical school located in New York City, dedicated to providing high-quality education and training to future physicians and physician assistants. The school's mission is to improve access to healthcare in communities where provider shortages exist and to promote excellence in clinical practice, research, and community service.
MD Program
The MD Program at CUNY School of Medicine is a full-time, integrated medical curriculum designed to prepare students for clinical excellence and leadership in communities where healthcare provider shortages exist and high-quality care is essential.
Curriculum Structure
The curriculum builds upon the Bachelor of Science (BS) degree with advanced coursework in medical sciences and clinical practice. The MD phase emphasizes:
- Clinical rotations across NYC Health + Hospitals sites and affiliates
- Continued integration of biomedical sciences with patient-centered care
- Training in population health, ethics, professionalism, and health systems
Registration Requirements
- Full-time enrollment (minimum of 9 credits per semester) is required each fall and spring.
- Students must register on time for all required courses in the MD curriculum to maintain good standing.
- Students who fail to register during the official registration period, or who substitute required courses with non-approved electives, will be considered to have resigned from the MD Program unless prior written approval is granted by the Associate Dean for Student Affairs.
Schedule Changes & Course Drops
General Guidelines
- Required courses, including repeats, cannot be dropped without prior approval from the Associate Dean.
- Failure to complete a required course in its designated term may jeopardize future progression due to prerequisite constraints.
M1M3 Years
- Dropping courses is not permitted after the registration period.
- Any attempt to drop or modify required coursework may result in dismissal from the MD Program.
- Students with extenuating circumstances must meet with their academic advisor before any changes are considered.
M4 Year (Final Year)
All changes must be processed through the M4 Coordinator, and students must adhere to published deadlines and procedures. Students in M4 receive specific guidance on course selection and are allowed to add or drop courses during designated windows.
