Program Overview

CUNY BA Program Overview

The CUNY Baccalaureate for Unique and Interdisciplinary Studies (CUNY BA) is a program that allows students to create their own major. This program is designed for students who wish to pursue a major that does not exist at their home college.

Application Process

To apply to the CUNY BA program, students must submit an application that includes:

  • Their name and educational history
  • A personal statement describing their academic and post-graduate goals
  • An Area of Concentration (AOC) proposal, which is the cornerstone of the CUNY BA degree
  • Official transcripts from all non-CUNY colleges attended

Area of Concentration (AOC) Proposal

The AOC proposal is a critical component of the application. Students must craft a strong proposal that outlines their desired major and course of study.

Personal Statement

The personal statement is a brief essay (250-500 words) that describes the student's academic and post-graduate goals and how they will achieve them through the CUNY BA program.

Official Transcripts

Students must submit official transcripts from all non-CUNY colleges attended. If a student has previously submitted their non-CUNY transcripts to the University Application Processing Center (UAPC), the CUNY BA program may be able to access them.

Admission Criteria

To be eligible for the CUNY BA program, students must:

  • Have completed at least 12 college credits
  • Have a GPA of at least 2.80

Matriculation

The college where the student is matriculated will serve as their home college in the program. Students who have never attended CUNY can file a CUNY transfer application to be matriculated at a CUNY college.

Readmission

If a student was previously enrolled in the CUNY BA program and wishes to reapply, they must complete an application for readmission.

Program Details

The CUNY BA program accepts applications throughout the year. Students are encouraged to apply as far in advance of the desired semester of entry as possible. The program has a priority application deadline of July 1st for the fall semester. Submitting an application by this deadline ensures that students receive their transfer evaluation and can work on their plan to complete their degree requirements. Additionally, early applicants benefit from the opportunity to revise their initial proposal, if needed, and access academic advisement early, allowing them to strategically plan their upcoming semester and join CUNY BA activities.
