Introduction to the Practical Nursing Certificate Program
The Practical Nursing Certificate Program at Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) offers a rewarding career path as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). Program Description
The Practical Nursing Certificate Program is designed to prepare students to become Licensed Practical Nurses, meeting the immediate needs of the healthcare workforce. The program serves as a strong foundation for further medical careers and consists of 46 credits: 16 general education prerequisite credits and 30 LPN course credits.
Admission Criteria
Admission to the program is competitive and based on both the GPA of five prerequisite courses (BIO 111, HED 110, ENG 101, MAT 104, and PSY 100) and performance on an admission exam such as the HESI A2.
Program Requirements
To advance through the program, students must earn a minimum grade of 73% (C) in all nursing courses. Upon successful completion, graduates are eligible to sit for the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN).
General Education Courses
The following general education courses are required:
- BIO 111: Human Biology 1
- ENG 101: English Composition 2
- HSD 110: Comprehensive Health Education
- MAT 104: Mathematics for Health Sciences 3
- PSY 100: Introduction to Psychology
LPN Certificate Courses
The LPN Certificate Courses are divided into three semesters:
Semester One
- LPN 101: Fundamentals of Nursing (w/ clinicals)
- LPN 103: Laboratory Practical Skills/Infection Control (Part 1)
- LPN 104: Pharmacology and Nutrition Across the Lifespan (w/ Medication Calculation & Administration)
Semester Two
- LPN 201: Parent-Child Nursing
- LPN 202: Laboratory Practical Skills (Part 2)
- LPN 203: Medical-Surgical Nursing
- LPN 204: Laboratory Practical Skills (Part 3)
Semester Three
- LPN 301: Gerontology/Rehabilitation & Restorative Care
- LPN 302: Transition to Practice (Quality, Legal and Ethical Aspects of Practical Nursing)
Total Credits
The total credits required for the PN Certificate Program are 46, consisting of 30 LPN course credits and 16 general education prerequisite credits.
Footnotes
- Students who have successfully completed BIO 425 within 5 years of admission to the program can use that course as a substitute for the BIO 111 requirement.
- ENG 100.5 will also satisfy the ENG 101 requirement.
- MAT 104 must be taken at BMCC. MAT 104.5 will satisfy the requirements of MAT 104.
