Adolescent Mathematics (MA) Program
The Adolescent Mathematics (MA) program is designed for applicants without prior New York State teacher certification in Mathematics 7-12.
Academic Plan
The master's program follows the academic plan MATAE-MA.
Total Credits
- For Students Who Began The Program Fall 2024 and Beyond: 43 credits, including 15 credits of graduate coursework in Mathematics and Statistics.
- For Students Who Began The Program Before Fall 2024: Earn at least 41 credits.

Transfer of Credits and Waivers
Transfer of Credits
A matriculated student may request a transfer of credit for a graduate-level course completed at another institution.
Waivers
A waiver of a course requirement may be granted to a student who has completed an undergraduate course at another college or a graduate course taken over five years ago with the same or similar content as a Hunter College course required in the program.
Clinical Experiences
Students participate in Developmental Clinical Experiences (Clinical Block 1 and Clinical Block 2) and Student Teaching or Supervised Teaching.
Graduation
Graduation is the official completion of the program and conferral of an academic degree. Students must apply for graduation using CUNYFirst the semester before the semester of their planned graduation.
Certification and Licensure
The Adolescent Mathematics (MA) program leads to New York State certification to teach Mathematics in grades 7-12.
Types of Certification
Students are recommended for both initial and professional certification:
- The Initial Certificate is the entry-level teaching certificate and is valid for five years.
- The Professional Certificate is an advanced certificate.
Application Checklist
To apply for certification, students must:
- Review their fingerprint status.
- Take required certification exams and workshops.
- Apply for graduation.
- Apply for certification through the TEACH Account.
Additional Resources
- Expiring Certifications: Students may be eligible for an extension through NYSED's TEACH Online Services.
- Out of State Certification or Licensure: Students must complete the Out of State Certification and Licensure Form.
- Hunter International Students (F1 Visa Holder) Certification or Licensure: Students must request a TEACH Access Number (TAN) and use it in lieu of a Social Security Number.
- Letter Requests: Students can request a letter from the School of Education to verify their education experience.
- Internship Certification for Graduate Teacher Education Students: The Internship Certificate allows a teacher or educational leadership candidate to serve as a teacher or leader of record while completing the master's degree program.
