Summer 2023 Study Abroad/Professional Development Program
The Eugenio María de Hostos Community College of The City University of New York offers educators the opportunity to participate in a special training program focused on the education of English Language Learner (ELL) students.
About the Program
This cultural enriching program course explores the academic needs of ELL students and provides teachers with the necessary tools for students to succeed in the classroom. The program works in collaboration with the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute at The City College of New York; The Ministry of Education of the Dominican Republic; Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo and the Dominican Republic's Instituto Superior de Formación Docente Salomé Ureña.
Program Phases
- Phase I: In New York City – June 12 - 27, 2023 from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. Participants will attend a series of professional development workshops, developed and facilitated by local partners from the New York City Department of Education, faculty from several CUNY campuses, and community-based organizations serving English Language Learner students.
- Phase II: In The Dominican Republic – June 29 - July 9, 2023 The group departs to the Dominican Republic, where they participate in cultural and academic enriching training for 10 days; inclusive of lectures and workshops facilitated by faculty from overseas institutions. In addition, the program offers site visits to public schools, the National Palace, cultural centers, guided tours to museums, and art galleries, as well as historical sites.
Program Details
The classes/training emphasize the art, history, culture, and education of Dominicans and other ELL children. At the end of the program, participants work in groups to develop projects & curriculum for their students, which are presented at the end of the course, including dialogues about their learned experience, curriculum design and activities reflective of their student population. Former program participants have developed innovative curriculum across disciplines which address topics of gender, race, ethnicity, and identity among others. Other topics include the immigrant experience of the English language learner population. Teaching strategies and best practices in connection with all academic subjects.
Application Information and Timeline
- Application Packet due April 23, 2023:
- Hostos Program Application Form and emergency contact information
- Letter of recommendation from a supervisor or school principal if you are a teacher
- A one-page personal statement explaining your reasons for participating in the program
- Accepted participants will complete a registration packet with the following:
- CUNY Waiver of Liability and Release Agreement forms
- Medical Form completed by a physician clearing you to travel
- Media Release Form
- Proof of enrollment in CUNY Student Travel Insurance
Program Cost
The program cost of $3,000.00, includes:
- Course fees at Hostos and partner institutions
- Roundtrip airfare and ground transportation
- Double occupancy hotel
- Admission to museums and heritage sites Translation/interpretation services available in English and Spanish per participants' requests. Payment due in three installments: April 26, May 24, and June 14, 2023. Please note, a $100.00 non-refundable deposit must be submitted with the application.
