First-Year Mentorship Program

The First-Year Mentorship Program at Hostos Community College is designed to help incoming students transition into college life. It provides resources, guidance, and opportunities for students to build a strong academic foundation, connect with peers, and succeed during their first year at college.

Program Details

• The program is typically open to all first-year students, whether they are freshmen, transfer students, or students starting their college journey in the fall or spring semesters.
• Participation in the program is optional, but it is strongly encouraged for all incoming first-year students to ensure a smoother transition to college life.
• The program includes a variety of activities, such as:
  • Orientation sessions and campus tours
  • Class registration assistance in conjunction with the Academic Advising and success teams
  • Social events and peer networking opportunities
  • Group study sessions with the Hostos Library and First Year Seminars
• Students are assigned peer mentors
  avigators to guide them through their first year, helping them navigate academic challenges and offering advice about college life.

Academic Support

• The program supports academic success by offering workshops on time management, study skills, and note-taking, as well as academic and personal advising to help students plan their course schedule.
• Students have access to tutoring services and academic resources that can help them stay on track.

Social Integration

• The program fosters a sense of community by organizing social events and open houses, and events that allow students to meet their peers.
• Mentors assist in informing students of events occurring around campus that can elevate their personal and academic experience at Hostos.

Ongoing Involvement

• While the program is meant to support new students, it welcomes and assists any student who could benefit from mentoring and resource navigation.
• The program keeps students aware of programs and leadership opportunities to keep them engaged, including involvement in student organizations, mentoring programs, or career development initiatives.

Mentor Profiles

• First-Year Mentors are undergraduate students or recent graduates who provide support and guidance to new students.
• Examples of mentors include:
  • Oumoul Zakari, an undergraduate student who transferred from Bronx Community College
  • Miriam Fidelis, a recent graduate who is pursuing a career in medicine
  • Jeffery Hidalgo, a Digital Design major who is part of the PTK Honors Society
  • Akoli Sessi, a sophomore majoring in Liberal Arts and Science who plans to become a registered nurse
  • Fabian Richard-Powell, a Game Design major who is active in various clubs on campus

Program Goals
