Bachelor Degree with Integrated International Foundation Year (Engineering) BEng

Overview

The Bachelor Degree with Integrated International Foundation Year (Engineering) offers an opportunity to international students who have the potential and motivation to succeed, but do not yet have the formal qualifications required for entry to Year 1 of a University of Leeds Engineering-related undergraduate degree programme.


Course Details and Modules

The course lasts four years, with the first year acting as a 'Level 0' foundation year. This foundation year has been designed in collaboration with the academic school of the degree course that students will progress onto once they have successfully completed their foundation year. Within this route, there are specific pathways leading to a wide range of engineering degrees. Modules will be selected based on the degree course chosen to progress onto.


Year 1 Compulsory Modules

  • Academic Study Skills for Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths | 40 credits
  • Elementary Differential Calculus (Version 1) | 10 credits
  • Elementary Integral Calculus (Version 1) | 10 credits
  • Introduction to Applied Mathematics 1 | 10 credits
  • Introduction to Applied Mathematics 2 | 10 credits

Year 1 Optional Modules

  • Elementary General and Inorganic Chemistry (IFY) | 10 credits
  • Elementary Physical Chemistry (IFY) | 10 credits
  • Elementary Organic Chemistry (IFY) | 10 credits
  • Elementary Analytical Chemistry and Chemistry Project | 10 credits
  • Thermal and Materials Physics | 10 credits
  • Waves and Particles | 10 credits
  • Fields and Electricity | 10 credits
  • Introduction to Experimental Physics | 10 credits

Learning and Teaching

A variety of teaching and learning methods are used on this course, with teaching delivered through lectures, workshops, and seminars, supported by virtual learning platforms to enhance the learning journey. Students are taught by expert academics, from lecturers through to professors, and may also be taught by industry professionals with years of experience, as well as trained postgraduate researchers.


Assessment

Modules in the international foundation year use a variety of assessment methods, including exams, essays, reports, and presentations.
