Language for Arts and Humanities
Overview
The Language for Arts and Humanities program is designed to improve academic English language skills to the level needed to study a Masters degree, whilst adapting to life in the UK and at the University of Leeds. Students will have the chance to study academic English directly relevant to arts and humanities, experience and adapt to study in the UK ahead of their degree, become familiar with the University facilities, settle into Leeds before their Masters begins, and meet other students and build a community of peers.
Course Details and Modules
The curriculum for this pre-sessional course is developed in collaboration with the academic faculty and is informed by research in English language teaching. Students will focus closely on the skills they will need for their subject area, studying with students progressing to arts and humanities degrees. The course structure includes:
- Listening to introductory academic lectures exploring different themes over six weeks
- Working on understanding content and language used, along with core texts, through a series of language classes and seminars
- Typical modules/components studied may change from time to time
Learning and Teaching
Students will learn how to use language appropriate for their degree to express their thoughts and ideas effectively. Teaching methods include:
- Classes, lectures, or practical sessions and group seminars
- Individual and group work
- Independent study to practise skills, deepen knowledge, and prepare for the degree
- Dedicated time with tutors to address questions about language and learning
- Teaching staff contribute to academic research in language teaching, informing course content
Assessment
A range of assessment methods are used, which may include:
- Written assignments
- Speaking assignments
- Presentations
- Research projects
Entry Requirements
The entry requirement for this pre-sessional English course depends on the IELTS requirement of the Masters course. For a Masters course requiring an overall IELTS score of 6.5, students will need:
- 6.0 overall with no components below 5.5
- Other English qualifications are accepted, as listed on the entry requirements page
- The minimum age for students studying on this course is 18 years old

Course Structure
The course is taught over six weeks, with classes normally taking place between 9am and 5pm from Monday to Friday. Teaching will take place on the University of Leeds campus.
