German BA

The German BA course at the University of Leeds allows students to develop professional-level language skills in German, whether they are beginners or have prior knowledge. The course is designed to help students become highly fluent in German, including oral proficiency, professional communication, and written language.

Course Overview

The course is highly flexible, allowing students to focus on their German skills while having the choice of a wide range of optional modules to personalize their study. Students will spend their first two years building their language skills through core modules and then take a year abroad to put everything they have learned into practice.

Course Structure

The course structure includes:

• Year 1: Core modules and optional modules, such as German Language Awareness and Skills, Beginners German, and Exploring German-Speaking Cultures, Histories and Societies.
• Year 2: Core modules and optional modules, such as German Language Skills in Context, Introduction to German Cinema, and Culture, Critique and Othering in the German-Speaking World.
• Year 3: Compulsory year abroad, where students can study at a partner institution or gain practical work experience.
• Year 4: Core modules and optional modules, such as Advanced German Language in Contemporary Discourses, Contemporary German Cinema, and Final Year Project: Dissertation.

Learning and Teaching

The course uses a range of different learning and teaching styles to help students benefit from the expertise of the tutors. This includes lectures, seminars, and one-on-one tutorials and workshops. The majority of teaching will be delivered by small group seminars, and students will get to know their tutors who will support them in and outside the classroom.

Assessment

The course ensures inclusive assessment by making sure students are assessed in a range of ways. This includes group projects, professional language projects, podcasts, video blogs, translations, business pitches, posters, public engagement projects, imagined autobiographies, and mini exhibitions.

Entry Requirements

The typical A-level offer for the course is ABB, with a B grade in the language required for post-A level language route students. Other qualifications, such as Access to HE Diploma, BTEC, Cambridge Pre-U, International Baccalaureate, and Irish Leaving Certificate, are also accepted.

Alternative Qualifications

The university accepts a range of alternative qualifications, including:

• Access to HE Diploma: Pass diploma with 60 credits overall, including at least 45 credits at level 3, of which 30 credits must be at Distinction and 15 credits at Merit or higher.
• BTEC: The university will consider the level 3 QCF BTEC at Subsidiary Diploma level and above in combination with other qualifications.
• Cambridge Pre-U: M1, M1, M2.
• International Baccalaureate: 34 points overall with 16 at Higher Level.
• Irish Leaving Certificate: H2, H2, H2, H3, H3, H3.

The tuition fees for the course are:

• UK: Ł9,790 per year
• International: Ł26,500 per year
