Program Overview
Midwifery (Blended Learning) BSc
The University of Leeds offers a Midwifery (Blended Learning) BSc program, which is a research-led and Russell Group university course. This program enables students to become future-focused, resilient midwives, equipped with the competence and confidence to think critically and deliver high-quality, compassionate, and evidence-based care.
Course Overview
The course is designed to prepare students to become high-caliber, sought-after midwifery graduates. It is developed in partnership with the Leeds Maternity Voices Partnership (MVP) and current students, providing real-life experiences and perspectives of women and families. The program consists of 50% academic work and 50% clinical practice, with placements within Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust and York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
Course Structure
The course is structured into three years, with compulsory modules in each year. The modules include:
- Year 1: Midwifery Basics, Foundations of Midwifery Practice, and Optimising Care
- Year 2: Compassionate Care, Global and Cultural Insights into Maternal Care, and Using Evidence for Practice
- Year 3: Midwifery: Dissertation, Promoting Excellence in Midwifery Practice, and Preparation for Becoming a Midwife
Learning and Teaching
The program uses a flexible blended learning approach, allowing students to balance the course with other commitments. Teaching and learning resources are immersive and accessible, ensuring inclusivity for all students. The course also includes innovative technologies such as simulation and online platforms to enhance education and engagement.
Assessment
The program uses a range of assessment methods, including essays, presentations, MCQs, exams, and a final dissertation. Assessments are designed to consolidate theoretical learning and enable students to embed principles into practice, meeting the standards set out by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
Entry Requirements
The entry requirements for the program include:
- A-level: ABB, including Biology or Human Biology at grade B or above
- GCSE: Five GCSEs at a minimum of a Grade 4 / C, including English, mathematics, and a science subject
- Alternative qualifications: Access to HE Diploma, BTEC, International Baccalaureate, Irish Leaving Certificate, and Scottish Highers

Career Opportunities
On successful completion of the program, students are eligible to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) as a midwife. There are many opportunities for midwives, from rotational posts in hospitals or the community to specialist practitioner and management roles.
Study Abroad and Work Placements
The program offers opportunities for study abroad and work placements, including a two-week elective placement in Year 3. This placement can be local, national, or international, allowing students to experience midwifery practice in a different setting or in an area of particular interest.
