Nursing (Child) BSc

The University of Leeds offers a Nursing (Child) BSc program, which is an innovative and accessible way to begin a pathway to becoming a child nurse. This integrated degree program is developed in partnership with service users, carers, current students, and practitioners, providing students with real-world experiences.

Course Overview

The program aims to develop students into forward-thinking nurses who have the competence and confidence to think critically and deliver high-quality, compassionate, and evidence-informed care. Students will learn how to work inclusively with all people and families and others involved in care, developing resilience and becoming role models for other professionals.

Accreditation

Students who successfully complete this program will be able to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

Course Details and Modules

The program is taught by a supportive and inspirational team and has been designed to give students a stimulating student experience. The course structure is equally split between university and clinical placements and healthcare settings.

Year 1 Compulsory Modules

• Nursing: Key Concepts of Health and Wellbeing (40 credits)
• Child Nursing: Applying the Key Concepts of Health and Wellbeing (40 credits)
• Nursing: Working in Partnership to Promote Health and Wellbeing (40 credits)

Year 2 Compulsory Modules

• Nursing: Providing Quality Care (40 credits)
• Child Nursing: Health Promotion and Management of Long-term Conditions (40 credits)
• Nursing: Promoting Health and Wellbeing in Challenging Situations (40 credits)

Year 3 Compulsory Modules

• Nursing: Dissertation (40 credits)
• Child Nursing: Providing Complex Care (40 credits)
• Nursing Leadership and Role Transition (40 credits)

Learning and Teaching

The program utilizes a range of learning and teaching methods, including face-to-face activities and online digital technologies. Methods of teaching and learning are highly participative, with a combination of tutor-led input and support, learning through group work and discussion, and individual exercises and practice.

Assessment

In clinical practice, students will be assessed by registered professionals who are responsible for their learning and development while on placement. Assessment takes many forms within the University, including individual and group assignments, written and oral exams, and practical assessments.

Entry Requirements

• A-level: BBB, including one of the following subjects: Applied Science, Biology, Chemistry, Human Biology, Physics, Psychology, or Sociology
• GCSE: 5 GCSEs at Grade C or 4, including English, Maths, and a Science
• Other qualifications, such as Access to HE Diploma, BTEC, International Baccalaureate, and Irish Leaving Certificate, are also accepted

• UK: Ł9,790
• International: Ł32,750 (per year)

Applications are made through UCAS. The University encourages students to prepare for their career from day one and offers a range of help and advice to help students plan their career and make well-informed decisions.

Career Opportunities

Once qualified as a nurse, graduates could work in the NHS in hospitals or in the community, the private sector, or in public health. They could also choose to work abroad. Career paths include clinical nurse specialist, consultant nurse, nursing management, or education.
