Program Overview
Music with Enterprise BA
The University of Leeds offers a unique undergraduate degree program, Music with Enterprise BA, which combines musical interests with the study of enterprise and entrepreneurship. This program is the only one of its kind in the country, allowing students to explore their musical passions while developing valuable skills in entrepreneurship.
Course Overview
The Music with Enterprise BA program is a three-year, full-time course that provides students with a comprehensive understanding of music and enterprise. The program is delivered jointly by the School of Music and the Centre for Enterprise and Entrepreneurship Studies (CEES), part of the Leeds University Business School. Students will develop their skills as creative, critical, and reflective thinkers, gaining the tools and experience needed to be enterprising and independent workers and musicians.
Course Structure
The program is structured to give students a strong grounding in music and enterprise, while enabling them to develop their specific interests through the selection of optional modules in various areas of music. The course is designed to equip students with a broad range of advanced musical, entrepreneurial, and transferable skills.
Year 1
In the first year, students will gain and develop core skills in musical research and practice-research, engage with multiple ways of thinking about and understanding music, and be introduced to theories and concepts in enterprise and entrepreneurship. Compulsory modules include:

Year 2
In the second year, students will continue to develop their skills, applying their learning in new contexts. There is a strong emphasis on the relationship between theory and practice in both music and enterprise. Compulsory modules include:

Year 3

Learning and Teaching
Academics in the School of Music and the Centre for Enterprise and Entrepreneurship are experts in their fields, and their activities inform their teaching directly. The program uses a range of inclusive, active, and student-centered approaches to learning and teaching to engage students in their course and support them to develop their knowledge, understanding, and skills.
Assessment
The program uses a variety of assessment methods, each of which is chosen to best measure students' achievement of a module's learning outcomes and associated skills. Depending on the modules chosen, students are likely to encounter a mix of written assignments, creative outputs and portfolios, recitals and performances, presentations, project work, and online assessments.
Entry Requirements
- A-level: AAB. We also welcome BTEC applicants with DDD.
- If A levels or equivalent qualifications do not include Music, we would normally expect a discursive subject and evidence of musical literacy.
- Practical grades in music are not a requirement for this programme. However, if you want to study solo performance modules, you will need a minimum of ABRSM, Trinity Guildhall or Rockschool Grade 7 (or demonstrate that you are of equivalent standard by the time you arrive in Leeds).
Alternative Qualifications
The program accepts a range of alternative qualifications, including:
- Access to HE Diploma: 60 credits overall, with at least 45 credits at level 3 to include 30 credits at Distinction and 15 at Merit.
- BTEC: DDD.
- Cambridge Pre-U: D2, M2, M2, or D3, M1, M2 or D2, M1, M3.
- International Baccalaureate: 35 overall.
- Irish Leaving Certificate (higher Level): H2 H2 H2 H2 H3 H3.
- Scottish Highers / Advanced Highers: AABBB (including AB at advanced level) OR AAABB (including A at Advanced level).
- Welsh Baccalaureate: WJEC Level 3 Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales.
- UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma: Distinction.

Career Opportunities
A degree in Music with Enterprise from the University of Leeds equips students with valuable subject knowledge, cultural and social awareness, and a strong balance of musical, entrepreneurial, and transferable skills. Graduates can pursue careers in a wide range of areas within the music industry, including arts management, marketing, PR, creative production, performing, composing, teaching, and music therapy. Study Abroad and Work Placements
Students have the opportunity to apply to transfer onto the BA Music with Enterprise (International) variant and extend their degree by a year, spending their third year studying at one of the university's many partner universities worldwide. They can also extend their program by doing a work placement year between their second and final years of study, working with one or more organizations across the public, private, and voluntary sectors in the UK or overseas.
