Program Overview
Geography BA
The Geography BA program at the University of Leeds is a three-year full-time course that provides students with a comprehensive understanding of human geography. The program is accredited by the Royal Geographical Society and is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills to understand our rapidly changing world.
Course Overview
The course covers a range of topics, including international development, population growth, urban transformation, sustainability, climate change, migration, global geopolitics, human rights, globalization, and patterns of inequality. Students will develop skills in presenting ideas, data collection, presentation and analysis, and the use of specialist mapping and statistical software.
Course Structure
The course is structured around a combination of compulsory core modules and optional modules. In the first year, students will develop a grounding in the foundational concepts and themes of human geography, plus key skills in academic writing, digital learning, and data analysis. In the second year, students will be provided with a core program of research and career skills training, supplemented by optional modules that cover topics such as geo-politics and international development. In the third year, students will undertake a significant independent final year project, a human geography dissertation, alongside a selection of optional modules.
Modules
- The Urban Age (20 credits): This module explores the dynamic nature of urban and economic geography, including planetary urbanization, urban planning, and neoliberal globalization.
- Planet Under Threat (20 credits): This module examines the major environmental challenges facing humanity, including climate change, biodiversity loss, and deforestation.
- Digital Geographies (20 credits): This module provides a beginner's guide to geographical data analysis, including geographic information systems, data collection, and data visualization.
- Career Skills in Geography (10 credits): This module develops a suite of insights, skills, and experiences to prepare students for their future careers.
- Research Approaches in Human Geography (20 credits): This module provides training in the fundamentals of devising, conducting, and writing up qualitative research.
- Social and Spatial Data Analysis with GIS (10 credits): This module provides essential training in quantitative analysis, including social data statistics, spatial data analysis, and the theory behind Geographical Information Systems (GIS).
Fieldwork
The program includes fieldwork opportunities throughout the three years, giving students the chance to study a fascinating subject in contrasting environments away from the University. Fieldwork is integrated with lectures and module coursework, providing students with the opportunity to practice skills, gain first-hand experience of collecting and analyzing data, and develop valuable individual and team research skills.
Entry Requirements
- A-level: AAA or AAB, including a social science/humanities subject.
- GCSE: English Language and Mathematics at grade 4 (C) or higher.
- Extended Project Qualification, International Project Qualification, and Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate: Grade A plus AAB or ABB at A-level.
- Access to HE Diploma: Pass 60 credits overall with 45 credits at Level 3.
- BTEC: D*DD or DDD in National Extended Diploma.
- Cambridge Pre-U: D3, D3, D3 or D3, D3, M2.
- International Baccalaureate: 6,6,6 at higher level or 6,6,5 at higher level.
- Irish Leaving Certificate: AAAAA or AAAABB at higher level.

- UK: Ł9,790
- International: Ł29,500 per year
