Introduction to the Religion MA Program

The Religion MA program at the University of Leeds is designed to deepen students' understanding of religious beliefs and practices, and their impact on contemporary society. This program explores the relevance of theology, sacred scripture, religious ritual, and faith-based organizations to issues such as climate change, terrorism, global development, gender, sexuality, and race discrimination.

Program Overview

The Religion MA program is a 12-month full-time or 24-month part-time course that delves into the concept of religion in the context of different political and social theories. Students will critically examine the role of religion in shaping our understanding of the world and its relevance to contemporary issues. The program draws on academic expertise from across the School of Philosophy, Religion, and History of Science, including theological, philosophical, sociological, and anthropological approaches.

Course Structure

The program includes two core modules:

1. Religion, Politics, and Society, which critically interrogates the concept of religion in different political and social contexts.
2. Studying Religion: Research Process, Methods, and Ethics, which prepares students for independent research on aspects of religion, society, and public life.

Optional modules cover topics such as:

• Religion, Gender, and Sexuality
• Theology and Public Life
• Research Project (Theology and Religious Studies)
• Special Options in Theology and Religious Studies

Learning and Teaching

The program uses a variety of teaching methods, including lectures, seminars, tutorials, work-based learning, fieldwork, and workshops. Independent study is also vital, allowing students to develop their skills and prepare for taught sessions and assessments.

Assessment

Assessment methods emphasize knowledge and essential skills development, including written assignments, essays, in-course assessments, group and individual presentations, and reports.

Entry Requirements

Applicants need a bachelor's degree with a 2:1 (hons) or equivalent qualification, preferably in Arts and Humanities or Social Sciences. Relevant experience, interest in religious studies and theology, or coming from a complementary area of expertise may also be considered.

English Language Requirements

IELTS 6.5 overall, with no less than 6.0 in any component, is required for international students.

• UK students: Ł12,000 (total)
• International students: Ł26,500 (total)
