Program Overview


Plant Science and Biotechnology MSc

The Plant Science and Biotechnology MSc program is designed to develop expertise in molecular plant science and its application. The course covers the theory behind modern techniques and methodologies in biomolecular plant sciences, including molecular biology methods, genomics, proteomics, and structural biology.


Course Overview

The program aims to provide students with the theoretical and practical skills required for a successful career in plant science. Modules cover diverse topics such as research planning and communication, advanced biomolecular technologies, practical bioinformatics, and a protein engineering mini-lab project. Students will also undertake modules in sustainable crop production and crop science and biotechnology alongside an individual research project.


Course Structure

The course is a full-time 12-month MSc program assessed entirely through coursework. The program consists of three semesters:


Semester 1

  • Practical Bioinformatics: introducing students to relevant tools and approaches in bioinformatics.
  • Research Planning and Communication: developing transferable skills essential for scientific research.
  • Sustainable Crop Production: examining drivers for change in food and agricultural systems, UK and global food security, and climate adaptation.

Semester 2

  • Advanced Biomolecular Technologies: providing the theoretical background to cutting-edge techniques and developing skills in data analysis and interpretation.
  • Crop Science and Biotechnology: exploring future crops, advanced plant breeding techniques, and new techniques for genome engineering.

Semester 3

  • Independent Research Project: students choose and undertake a project on a specific topic relating to plant science and/or biotechnology, receiving extensive specialist training in experimental design, advanced techniques, and data analysis.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should normally have a bachelor's degree with at least a 2:1 in a subject that has covered the cellular and molecular basis of life, such as genetics, microbiology, or biochemistry. English language requirements include an IELTS score of 6.5 overall, with no less than 6.0 in any component.
