Introduction to the Religion PGDip Program

The Religion PGDip program at the University of Leeds is designed to deepen students' understanding of religious beliefs and practices, exploring how these shape our society and world. This course is essential for responding to significant societal, ethical, and political challenges.

Course Overview

On this course, students will explore how religious traditions influence our understanding of the world. They will learn about the relevance of theology, sacred scripture, religious ritual, and faith-based organizations to contemporary issues such as climate change, terrorism, global development, gender, sexuality, and race discrimination, migration, and diaspora.

Course Structure

The course draws on academic expertise from across the School of Philosophy, Religion, and History of Science, including theological, philosophical, sociological, and anthropological approaches. Students will be taught by expert academics and may also be taught by industry professionals with years of experience.

Year 1 Compulsory Modules

• Religion, Politics and Society (30 credits)
• Studying Religion: Research Process, Methods and Ethics (30 credits)

• External Placement (30 credits)
• Religion, Gender and Sexuality (30 credits)
• Theology and Public Life (30 credits)
• Research Project (Theology and Religious Studies) (30 credits)

Learning and Teaching

Students will be taught through a variety of methods, including lectures, seminars, and tutorials. Assessment methods will emphasize not just knowledge but also essential skills development, including written assignments, essays, in-course assessment, group and individual presentations, and reports.

Entry Requirements

Applicants will need a bachelor degree with a 2:1 (hons) or equivalent qualification, preferably in Arts and Humanities or Social Sciences. Relevant professional experience may also be considered. International students must meet the English language requirements, with an IELTS score of 6.5 overall and no less than 6.0 in any component.

Scholarships and Financial Support

There may be help for students in the form of loans and non-repayable grants from the University and from the government. Scholarships are also available to help fund Masters studies.
