Pre-sessional Language for Science: Civil Engineering
Overview
The Pre-sessional Language for Science: Civil Engineering course is designed to improve academic English language skills to the level needed to study a Masters degree, whilst adapting to life in the UK and at the University of Leeds. During this pre-sessional course, students will have the chance to study academic English directly relevant to civil engineering, experience and adapt to study in the UK ahead of their degree, become familiar with the University facilities, settle into Leeds before their Masters begins, and meet other students and build a community of peers.
Course Details and Modules
The curriculum for this pre-sessional course is developed in collaboration with the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences and the School of Civil Engineering, and is informed by research in English language teaching. The course is 10 weeks long, full-time, and is delivered on campus. The course structure includes:
- Language for Science and Engineering
- Language for Civil Engineering
Learning and Teaching
Students will learn how to use language appropriate for their degree to express their thoughts and ideas effectively. They will be taught in classes, lectures, or practical sessions and group seminars, and will work individually and with others. Independent study is an important element of this course, allowing students to practise their skills, deepen their knowledge, and prepare for their degree.
Assessment
The course uses a range of assessment methods, which may include written assignments, speaking assignments, presentations, and research projects.
Entry Requirements
The entry requirement for this pre-sessional English course depends on the IELTS requirement of the student's Masters course. If the Masters requires an overall IELTS score of 6.5, students will need:
- 5.5 overall with no components below 5.5 The minimum age for students studying on this course is 18 years old.
Fees
The international fee for this course is Ł5,733 per year. All learning materials are included in the tuition fee. There may be additional costs related to the course or programme of study, or related to being a student at the University of Leeds.
Accreditation
The course is accredited by BALEAP.
Dedicated Facilities
To support learning, students will have access to the Language Zone a study and resource centre for independent language learning equipped with a computer cluster for personal study, books and magazines, audio and video resources. Students will also be able to take part in workshops, language groups, and language advice drop-ins to get the most out of their studies.
Teaching Staff
Teaching staff at the Language Centre contribute to academic research in language teaching, which informs the course content. Students will be taught by expert academics, from lecturers through to professors, as well as industry professionals with years of experience, and trained postgraduate researchers.
