Art Gallery and Museum Studies MA

The Art Gallery and Museum Studies MA is designed to develop students' understanding of key ideas and issues in curatorship, museology, and museum management. This Masters course provides a combination of theoretical and practical approaches to curation, interpretation, and engaging audiences, preparing students for a successful career in the museum and art gallery sector.


Course Overview

Studying the Art Gallery and Museum Studies MA, students will explore and challenge key ideas that have shaped museum practice. They will consider the ways in which material culture has been represented and interpreted by historians and cultural theorists, the methodologies behind museum practice, and methods of display and interpretation. The course will also put theory and practice into dialogue, allowing students to develop innovative approaches to curation and interpretation.


Course Structure

The course is taught through a combination of compulsory and optional modules, allowing students to explore theoretical approaches and their practical applications. The compulsory modules include:


  • History and the Museum: Traces the emergence of art galleries, museums, and country houses in western Europe, opening up critical questions about how the past is presented.
  • Interpretations: Students will work on a digital interpretive intervention based around selected museum, gallery, and heritage collections, preparing them for the option of undertaking a work placement project with an external organization.
  • Critical Issues: Supports students in locating interpretive, conservation, curatorial, or marketing practices in the context of current academic and professional debates, developing their own mini-research project.

Learning and Teaching

Students will be taught by leading researchers and experienced practitioners in their fields, benefiting from a range of teaching and learning methods, including lectures, seminars, group learning sessions, and insights into specific collections in museum, archive, and library sessions. External speakers will provide insights into contemporary practice in the sector, and students will utilize digital technologies and resources relevant to the museum and gallery sector.


Assessment

Assessment methods can include essays, individual and group presentations, digital interpretation projects, portfolio building, and project work, depending on the modules chosen.


Entry Requirements

Applicants will need a bachelor degree with a 2:1 (hons) or equivalent qualification, preferably in an Arts, Humanities, or Social Sciences related degree. Relevant experience, an interest in arts, galleries, and museums, or coming from an area of expertise complementary to arts, galleries, and museums, will also be considered. The course will equip students with a good understanding of the issues and approaches to art gallery and museum studies, as well as practical work experience, making them very valuable to employers. Graduates work in various roles, including heads of collection, curators, and education staff in local authority museums, national heritage organizations, charitable trusts, and in arts marketing and public relations.


Work Placements and Industry Experience

Students can sign up for a group placement project to gain first-hand experience of contemporary museum and gallery practice. Placement projects vary, but past collaborations have included organizations such as Abbey House Museum, Leeds City Museum, and the Royal Armouries.
