Program Overview
Introduction to the PK-3 ECE Credential Program
The PK-3 ECE Credential Program at California State University Long Beach (CSULB) is designed to foster the development of diverse educators. This program centers on approaches that apply evidence-based practices with developmentally and culturally responsive curricula and assessment strategies for children enrolled in preschool through third grade.
Program Objectives
Teacher candidates in this program are expected to nurture and prepare all children in their classrooms from an equity-minded lens. The program aims to help teacher candidates develop a broader understanding of the diversity of families in urban settings and apply that expanded understanding to the curriculum and interactions with families.
Program Outcomes
At the conclusion of this program, students will be prepared with knowledge and skills to:
- Deliver developmentally rich instruction in literacy, math, science, and health for PK-3 learners.
- Foster inclusive, supportive environments for diverse learners, including multilingual children and children with disabilities.
- Apply observation and assessment skills through hands-on clinical experiences.
- Embrace an asset-based lens to nurture each child's strengths and growth.
Program Commitments
Two key commitments that CSULB upholds are:
- Offering multiple pathways to complete the program.
- Prioritizing equitable learning.
Program Philosophy
The PK-3 ECE Credential Program is designed to prepare educators to recognize that children are active constructors of their understanding of the world around them. It is their role to provide opportunities for children to initiate their own learning through exploration, discovery, and meaningful experiences that build on their prior knowledge and interests. This strong approach will enable candidates to foster a supportive learning environment that appreciates children's interests and nurtures their natural curiosity, therefore empowering children to become lifelong learners.
Program Goals
The hope is to inspire future educators to enter this field with confidence and be well-supported, properly recognized, and affirmed in the critical work they do. The program is committed to student success and prides itself on the student-centered nature of its approach.
