Paramedical Services Program

The Paramedical Services program is an intensive program that includes classroom, skills laboratory, hospital, and field clinical experiences. The invaluable skills learned in this program can be applied to several occupations, such as clinics, ambulance services, fire departments, hospitals, and factories. Students work with instructors in person while engaging with state-of-the-art learning tools like augmented reality goggles and high-fidelity mannequins. The program also provides the chance to learn in a full-size ambulance for training.

Program Overview

The Paramedical Services program is conducted in cooperation with Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Systems and is approved by the Illinois Department of Public Health and the Division of EMS and Highway Safety. Upon successful completion of the program, students will be eligible to take the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician's examination.

Admission Requirements

Admission into the program requires a current state of Illinois EMT-Basic license and verification of completion of an anatomy and physiology course. Admission may be granted by the program director with a license pending, provided verification of passage of the NREMT EMT-Basic examination is submitted.

Program Options

Students can choose from a two-year associate degree, a two-year certificate program, or a 7.5 credit hour certificate program. The Paramedical Services program is available as a two-year associate in applied science degree or a one-year certificate program.

Hands-On Experience

The classes cover the Illinois state objectives as well as experience and real-world scenarios targeted toward local settings. Students will have the opportunity to train on equipment in their respective stations, allowing them to gain knowledge and skills specific to their situations. The program incorporates a full-sized training ambulance for real-world simulation, as well as high-fidelity mannequins and augmented reality goggles. Students will complete clinical opportunities in a variety of patient care settings alongside trained preceptors and will also complete certifications in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and International Trauma Life Support (ITLS).

Additional Information

Students must complete a file with the Lake Land College Emergency Services office, including:

• Current EMT Basic License
• Current AHA BLS CPR certification card
• Current diver's license or Illinois state picture ID
• Immunizations as required by The Illinois Department of Public Health for Healthcare Providers
• High school diploma or GED equivalent
• Physical exam
• Background check
• Drug test

Students will need to acquire textbooks, equipment like stethoscopes and clinical shirts, and undergo drug screenings and background checks. Upon completion of the degree, there will be additional expenses, including licensure application fees, written testing fees, and psychomotor testing fees.
