Introduction to the Exercise and Sport Science Program

The Exercise and Sport Science program at Curtin College is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the human body and its functions, as well as the principles of exercise and sport science. This program is not currently available to Australian students.


Program Overview

The program consists of two stages: Stage 1, which lasts for 2-3 trimesters (8-12 months), and Stage 2, which lasts for 2 semesters (12 months). The program is offered at the Curtin Bentley campus.

Course Overview

The Exercise and Sport Science program aims to build a career centered on improving lives. Students will gain theoretical and practical understanding of exercise and sport physiology, biomechanics, motor control and learning, and exercise and sport psychology. The program emphasizes client-centered practice, helping students develop strong interpersonal communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.

  • Description: The role of empirical evidence in making decisions in health practice, including research methodologies, measurement, observation, data collection, research ethics, bio-statistical analysis, and strategies to understand, question, and evaluate evidence.

Human Structure and Function (HSF1000)

  • Description: Introduction to the human body and key organ systems, including anatomical terminology, relationships between body cells, tissues, and organs, and foundation competencies in understanding neuromusculoskeletal anatomy.

Introduction to Psychology (IPSY1000)

Foundations for Professional Health Practice (FPHP1000)

  • Description: Introduction to ethical decision making in professional health practice, application of academic standards, and development of skills required for studying at university.

Functional Anatomy (FA1002)

  • Description: Development of foundation competencies in understanding neuromusculoskeletal anatomy of the trunk, upper and lower limbs as a basis for understanding normal human movement.

Human Physiology for Exercise Science (HPE1000S/HUMB1006)

  • Description: Foundation knowledge of human physiology and the physiological changes that occur through the human lifespan as pertinent to exercise science.

  • Description: Builds on an understanding of the fundamentals of physiology and develops students' knowledge of physical activity and exercise and their relationship to individuals and populations' health.
