The Pattern Making and Assembling Technique Certificate is a comprehensive 280-hour professional program designed for students who want to develop strong technical skills in garment construction, pattern drafting, and fit development.

This program focuses on the essential foundation of fashion production by teaching students how to translate design concepts into technically accurate, production-ready garments. Pattern making is the backbone of fashion design and garment manufacturing. This certificate prepares students to understand garment structure, fabric behavior, fit correction, and technical drafting processes required in professional studios and production environments.

  • Delivery Method: In-class and live online hybrid Students participate in lectures, drafting labs, sewing workshops, garment fittings, critiques, and technical portfolio reviews.

Program Journey

The program is divided into five modules:


  • MODULE 1 — Introduction to Pattern Making: Students begin by learning flat pattern making methods and foundational drafting techniques.
  • MODULE 2 — Fit and Measurement: Proper fit is essential in garment construction. Students learn how to take accurate personal measurements and how to measure mannequins correctly.
  • MODULE 3 — Drafting and Sloper Development: Students draft bottoms such as sleeve, skirt, and pant slopers and learn to develop dress patterns and button-up shirt patterns.
  • MODULE 4 — Garment Assembly and Textiles: Students gain practical sewing and textile knowledge required in professional production environments.
  • MODULE 5 — Final Collection and Presentation: In the final stage of the program, students develop a six-piece collection using pattern making techniques learned throughout the course.

Meet Your Instructors

Nargas Khabazha

Nargas opened her first studio in 1997 as a pattern maker for private label of her own clothing line and developed her skill for specializing in special sizes for women.


Melissa McSorley

Following in her mother and grandmother's footsteps, Melissa chose a career in the fashion industry and has been teaching for the last three years. She is a graduate from the Art Institute of Vancouver's Fashion Design and Merchandising program.
