English Learner Added Authorization (CTEL/CLAD) Program
The English Learner Added Authorization (CTEL/CLAD) program is designed for credentialed teachers seeking a Crosscultural Language and Academic Development (CLAD) certification approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC). This six-course online program aims to develop the capacity of teachers to effectively teach K-12 subject matter to English language learners in public, charter, and private schools.
Program Overview
- The program consists of an orientation course, four core courses, and a final portfolio course.
- It is offered 100% online.
- Upon completion, candidates are recommended to the CTC for the CLAD authorization.
Curriculum
- The program covers language systems, structures, forms, functions, and variations of both aural and written language forms.
- It includes materials and methods for understanding and analyzing socio-cultural and political factors that affect second-language development.
- The program also focuses on cultural concepts and perspectives, including cultural diversity, cross-cultural interaction, and family and community involvement.
Eligibility Requirements
- Candidates must possess a valid California teaching credential, services credential, children's center instructional permit, or children's center supervision permit.
- The credential must authorize the holder to provide instruction to pupils in preschool, kindergarten, any of grades 1 to 12 inclusive, or classes primarily organized for adults.
Program Completion Requirements
- Students must complete all coursework with an overall 3.0 GPA or higher and a minimum of a "C" letter grade on all courses.
- Completion of the student end-of-program survey is also required.
Course Waivers
- The University of California (UC) Los Angeles Extension, UC San Diego Extension, and UC Riverside Extension consortium have agreed to accept each other's courses for CLAD through CTEL.
