Phlebotomy Program

The Phlebotomy program is a course offered by the UCLA Medical Assistant Program, which teaches students to perform venipuncture.

Program Description

This program is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills required to become a Limited Phlebotomy Technician in the state of California. The course covers the function and structure of the capillaries, veins, and arteries, as well as the safe and effective use of equipment and supplies used for blood collection and specimen transport.

Program Objectives

The objectives of the Phlebotomy program include:

• Acquiring the knowledge and skills required to become a Limited Phlebotomy Technician in the state of California
• Explaining the function and structure of the capillaries, veins, and arteries
• Identifying the names and locations of the veins suitable for venous blood collection and capillary blood collections
• Understanding safe and effective use of equipment and supplies used for blood collection and specimen transport
• Understanding government and industry standards related to blood collection
• Acquiring effective communication skills with patients related to the collection of blood
• Completing blood collection training, a requirement of medical assistants

Program Details

The Phlebotomy program is part of the UCLA Health Medical Assistant Program, which combines the theory and practical experience necessary to prepare students to transition successfully into a career as a medical assistant.
