Household Financial Basics: The Financial Services Industry

This seminar is part of the Household Financial Basics Series where a panel of experts offers advice and tips and gives students a chance to ask questions regarding finances and running a household.

Learn how the operation of the Financial Services Industry and the Federal Government impact finances and the economy. The course covers topics such as:


  • The difference between a commercial bank, a credit union, and a savings bank
  • The role of an investment advisor, financial planner, or wealth advisor, including necessary licensing or credentials
  • The use of indexes and their functions
  • The functions of the NYSE, the Nasdaq, and Over the Counter
  • The roles of the Federal Reserve, the Treasury, and the IRS
  • The differences between Tax Preparers, Accountants, Tax Attorneys, and Enrollment Agents, and their functions
  • The secondary market for loans and its operation

The course provides a general understanding of the roles within the financial industry and how they relate to one another.
