Program Overview
Introduction to MBBS BSc Intercalation
The MBBS BSc intercalation program offers students the opportunity to study an additional Master's or PhD programme during their MBBS study. This is referred to as intercalation.
Eligibility and Funding
The following information is relevant to England-domiciled students only. Students from Wales, Scotland, or Northern Ireland should check with their regional funding body to see what is available. International students should refer to the relevant funding information for undergraduate courses.
Intercalation Details
Some MBBS students may choose to study an additional Master's or PhD programme during their MBBS study. The timing of an intercalating year affects where the funding comes from and whether there is funding available for postgraduate study.
Master's Intercalation
MBBS students wanting to intercalate with a Master's should intercalate in their 5th year of study - after they have completed their first four years of MBBS study. This means they will receive NHS funding for their Master's, and the remaining two years of their MBBS.
Funding Providers and Packages
The funding providers and packages for each year of study are as follows:
- Year 1: Medicine, Student Finance, Full undergraduate package
- Year 2: Medicine, Student Finance, Full undergraduate package
- Year 3: Integrated BSc, Student Finance, Full undergraduate package
- Year 4: Medicine, Student Finance, Full undergraduate package
- Year 5 (Intercalation MSc): Student Finance, NHS, Reduced-rate maintenance loan, NHS Bursaries
- Year 6: Medicine, Student Finance, NHS, Reduced-rate maintenance loan, NHS Bursaries
- Note: The funding package for Year 6 is the same as Year 5, with Student Finance and NHS providing a reduced-rate maintenance loan and NHS Bursaries.
Important Considerations
