Course Overview

The programme offers an in-depth study of social sciences and philosophy with a comprehensive grounding in research methods. In Year 1, students take modules introducing the three disciplines and the principles of social and political analysis. In Years 2 and 3, students choose modules in two disciplines (politics and philosophy or politics and economics) and in research methods. A limited number of study abroad placements may be available for students who wish to study abroad in Year 3.

Teaching and Learning

Teaching is based on lectures and seminars across the three participating departments. Normally, lectures are accompanied by small-group seminars or tutorials that allow for an in-depth and participatory approach to the topic. Students are generally expected to attend one lecture and one seminar per module per week.

Assessment

Modules may be assessed by written coursework, examination, presentations, or an independent research project or dissertation. Graded coursework and comments prepare students for the dissertation and independent research projects.

Employability

The degree prepares students for careers in the public sector, media, and policy community. It combines an education in social sciences and philosophy with a sustained treatment of the methods of social and normative inquiry, drawing on multiple lines of inquiry.
