Introduction to the Finnish and Romanian BA Program

The Finnish and Romanian BA program at University College London (UCL) offers students the opportunity to gain excellent language skills and profound knowledge of the literature, history, and culture of the regions where these languages are spoken. This program is taught at the School of Slavonic and East European Studies (SSEES), one of the largest departments in the UK for the study of Central, Eastern, and South-Eastern Europe.

Program Overview

• The program is a full-time, four-year undergraduate degree.
• It includes a year abroad, split between two countries where the chosen languages are spoken, providing students with the chance to attend a university overseas and gain valuable experience.
• Students will achieve the same linguistic competence regardless of whether they start a language from scratch or have previous knowledge of it.

Entry Requirements

A Levels

• Grades: ABB
• Subjects: No specific subjects, but at least two A-level subjects should be taken from UCL's list of preferred A-level subjects.
• GCSEs: English Language at grade B or 6 and Mathematics at grade C or 4.

Course Structure

• In each year of the degree, students will take a number of individual modules, normally valued at 15 or 30 credits, adding up to a total of 120 credits for the year.
• Modules are assessed in the academic year in which they are taken.
• The balance of compulsory and optional modules varies from program to program and year to year.

Teaching and Learning

• Language classes focus on developing the active skills of speaking, listening, writing, and reading through a variety of methods and media.
• Students are taught through a combination of lectures and seminars, as well as undertaking web-based study and group work.
• Typical contact hours vary between 8-12 hours per week, depending on the year of study and module choice.

Assessment

• Assessment will include written, oral, and aural examinations, presentations, extended essays, and a dissertation.
