French and German BA

The French and German BA program at University College London (UCL) is designed to equip students with near-native French language skills and excellent linguistic competence in German. The program aims to deepen students' knowledge of Germanic literature, history, and film, while also providing a comprehensive understanding of the cultures and societies of both languages.

Program Overview

The program is a four-year, full-time course that includes a year abroad, split between countries where French and German are spoken. Students will take language modules in French and German, as well as cultural modules covering a range of topics, including literature, film, history, and linguistics.

Entry Requirements

• A levels: ABB, with French required at grade A
• IB Diploma: 34 points, with a total of 16 points in three higher-level subjects, including French grade 6
• GCSEs: English Language at grade B or 6 and Mathematics at grade C or 4
• Contextual offer: BBB, with French required, and 32 points in the IB Diploma

• UK students: Ł9,790 (2026/27)
• International students: Ł32,000 (2026/27)

Program Structure

The program consists of four years of study, with the third year spent abroad. Students will take a range of compulsory and optional modules, including language modules, cultural modules, and a final-year dissertation.

Modules

• Year 1: Compulsory modules include Use of French 1, Introduction to German Studies 1, and Introduction to German Studies 2
• Year 2: Compulsory modules include French Oral 2, German Translation and Reading Comprehension, and Love-Violence-Laughter: Medieval and Early Modern Literature and Culture
• Year 3: Students will spend the year abroad, studying at a partner university or on an approved work placement
• Year 4: Compulsory modules include Discussion and Essay in German, and optional modules include French Oral 3, The Making of Modern France, and Reading French Texts

Assessment

Modules are assessed by a mixture of written examinations, essays, and other forms of coursework. Language modules will also include an oral examination.
