Geography BA

The Geography BA program at UCL is designed to examine and address urgent global issues such as climate change, migration, geopolitics, and urban development from a human and physical geography standpoint. Course Overview

The BA Geography program focuses on human geography, studying cultural, economic, and social patterns within spatial contexts. Students will explore topics such as migration, gender, race, identity, urban development, and the impact of empire and postcolonialism.

Year 1

• Students enroll in two large modules that teach core geographic skills and knowledge.
• Fieldwork components are included, and students learn about core concepts of geography as a scientific discipline.

Year 2

• One or two compulsory modules are supplemented by six or seven optional modules, including field classes.
• Emphasis is placed on research design, and students may begin to focus on topics such as development geography, environmental geography, urban geography, GIS, and climate change.

Year 3

• The dissertation is the main focus, where students work with an academic supervisor to develop an original piece of research on a topic of their choice.
• Students take further optional modules, including one from outside the Department if desired.

Teaching and Learning

• The program includes lectures, regular seminars, tutorials, practical classes, and fieldwork.
• In Year 1, students attend a week-long field class and undertake fieldwork in London.
