Archaeology with a Year Abroad BA

The Archaeology with a Year Abroad BA program at University College London (UCL) is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of archaeological concepts, practical techniques, and analytical methods. This four-year full-time program includes a year of study abroad at one of UCL's partner institutions.

Program Overview

The program is structured to give students a grounding in the practical and theoretical methods of archaeology, as well as an introduction to major issues in world prehistory. In the first year, core modules cover the broad range of materials analyzed by archaeologists, fieldwork methods, social anthropology, and a survey of world archaeology. The second and final years provide a more advanced understanding of archaeological theories and allow students to develop their own specialized interests through optional modules.

Year Abroad

The third year is spent studying abroad at a partner institution, where students study modules in archaeology and related subjects. This experience is designed to develop students' understanding of the theory and practice of archaeology outside the UK.

Final Year

In the final year, students critically reflect on their fieldwork experiences through a portfolio and write a 10,000-word dissertation on a detailed subject chosen with the support of a supervisor. Optional modules provide an in-depth study of particular geographical regions, periods, or archaeological materials.

Entry Requirements

• A levels: Grades ABB, with no specific subjects required but at least two A-level subjects should be taken from UCL's list of preferred A-level subjects.
• GCSEs: English Language and Mathematics at grade C or 4.
• International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma: 34 points, with a total of 16 points in three higher-level subjects, and no higher-level score below 5.
• Contextual offer: BBC for A levels, or 30 points for IB Diploma, with specific conditions.

• UK students: Ł9,790 (2026/27)
• International students: Ł39,200 (2026/27)

Various funding options are available, including student loans, scholarships, and bursaries. UK students from lower-income households may be eligible for a non-repayable bursary or certain scholarships.

Additional Costs

Fieldwork costs, such as travel and food, can be covered by the department for recommended UK-based projects. Students choosing other fieldwork projects may need to contribute to additional charges. Equipment costs, approximately Ł300 to Ł500, are expected for items like tents, sleeping bags, and waterproof footwear. Specific archaeology kit, such as a trowel, is also required.
