Description
This module covers various aspects of brain function and relates them to the workings of the mind. It includes how different parts of the brain contribute to the mind, looking at mental processes and how they are related to observed changes in brain function using functional neuro-imaging. The module also explores how different mental disorders are accompanied by brain changes that help understand where things might go wrong and how neurotechnology can be used in the treatment of some mental disorders. The aim is to give an overall view of brain function and how it relates to the mind.
Module Aims
The aims of the module are:
- To provide students with knowledge and understanding of how brain function, the conscious mind, and behaviour interact.
- To provide students with knowledge about how changes in brain function due to disease affect these functions.
- To reveal the relevance of the main concepts of psychiatry and build on their functional knowledge developed during the year 2 neuroscience module.
- To provide an introduction to the treatment of mental illness with a particular focus on healthy physical, social, and emotional functioning.
