Description

Overview

This module provides students with authentic engineering problems and experiences to promote professional values and behavior, setting Mechanical Engineering theory in a realistic context. It consists of three professional design projects designed to complement and extend the learning opportunities from Year 2 modules. Students face authentic engineering challenges to explore different aspects of the design cycle, simulating real-world professional practice. These projects are supplemented by materials and classes from the Mechanical Engineering Department and external sources.


Topics Covered

The topics covered are related to material taught in lectures and other Year 2 modules, including:


  • Classic design theory
  • Risk and reliability
  • Legal issues (IP, contracts, and liability)
  • Technical writing

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will be able to:


  • Calculate and manage risk and reliability issues
  • Assess legal obligations
  • Use tools from hand-sketching to computer-aided design and analysis for detailed engineering designs
  • Plan and safely perform basic operations on laboratory or workshop machinery
  • Interpret relevant data to inform assigned tasks
  • Demonstrate effective teamwork through professional collaboration
  • Present individual or group work in the form of a report and/or presentations
