Description

This module introduces students to the basics of innovation and entrepreneurship in healthcare through a practical, learning-by-doing approach. The module focuses on helping students understand how innovation happens in practice, particularly through problem identification and solution development. Students will be exposed to key innovation concepts and real-world examples that illustrate how new ideas move into healthcare settings. At a high level, the module introduces different forms of innovation activity and their roles in bringing solutions into the healthcare sector. The module emphasizes problem definition, ideation, and early-stage evaluation, with attention to how ideas can move from initial insight toward practical application in healthcare contexts. Students will also learn how AI agents can be used in innovation processes and the benefits and caveats of human-AI teams. Students will explore common sources of healthcare innovation, including clinical challenges, patient needs, technological opportunities, and organizational constraints. Through interactive seminar sessions, students will apply concepts through exercises and group work. Over the course of the term, students will learn how to conduct basic market research, assess customer and stakeholder needs, explore early-stage fundraising options, and develop and pitch their ideas. The module culminates in a final pitch, where students present their healthcare innovation projects. Throughout the module, students will work on healthcare-related challenges such as workforce shortages, chronic and non-communicable diseases, ageing populations, and system inefficiencies, building practical entrepreneurial skills that can be applied to healthcare innovation projects.
